The Long Awaited Arrival of the Song Sparrows

This week marked a milestone in this Spring’s 2014 bird migration. The Song Sparrows arrived in the Montreal region. First making their way in wooded areas around the St Lawrence Seaway, they have now arrived in Nature Parks along the Montreal Back River.

Weather had just turned milder and the first Canada Geese had but barely arrived. This just days following one more Spring Winter Storm.

The warmer temps lead to snow melting around trees creating the perfect bathing spots for the Song Sparrows.

The sun also warmed up the ground, allowing for the perfect feeding conditions. I first spotted a good two dozens of these birds on the South Shore of Montreal. Within a couple of days a few more groups had been reported throughout the region.
